Teacher and Pupil

After working in the classroom for over 14 years, I know exactly what an incredible responsibility it is to teach children and just how overwhelming and stressful it can be. As a teacher you need to prepare lessons, grade papers, plan bulletin boards, trips and shows, correspond with parents and administrators, prepare for testing and other evaluations, discipline and meet all your students social and emotional needs, plus incorporate any and all new programs schools are currently ushering in. And you do this while also trying to maintain a life of your own. I get how exhausting it is.

But I also have seen first-hand (and I am certain you have as well) that a child’s academic success and behavior is hugely linked to their emotional health. While we cannot control every aspect of a child’s life outside of the classroom, we can certainly create a safe and happy environment for them in school. My goal is to try and make this easier for you.

I created The Light Giver Stories books because it was something I wish I had as a teacher to make addressing my students’ social and emotional needs a little easier. I  often utilized stories as a segue to address topics and issues that my students were facing or struggling with. After discussing the challenges the characters were facing, and how they decided to handle them, it made it easier and more comfortable for the children and I to discuss how they might choose to handle similar situations. It had such a positive impact on the children individually, on the relationships between them and their fellow classmates, and the class' overall behavior.

The challenge I faced was that it was often difficult to find books that addressed certain topics, and I didn’t have an enormous amount of spare time to locate them. So, I decided to create one book that contained 22 stories that addressed a variety of issues. The Light Giver & Other Stories to Raise Emotionally Healthy Children, includes stories that address topics like ways to handle fear, insecurity, disappointment, bullying, envy, and others that reinforce good character traits like forgiveness, kindness, honesty, respect, patience and a lot more. The Light Giver Stories Workbook, offers supplemental activities, lessons and discussions that further support these topics. For a complete list of topics addressed in the book, click here:

The stories and lessons can be utilized with children as young as 5 and enjoyed by kids up to the age of 13. The independent reading level and vocabulary words are targeted to children with a 3rd - 5th grade reading level. Each story includes several discussion questions and a list of 20 Vocabulary words which could also serve as Spelling lists if you would like to include them as part of your literacy program. In order to make things easier for you, I included a story directory in the back of the book with brief summaries of each story and a list of issues each one addresses.
